The Museum Curator:
Maintains the PastPerfect database and identifies, catalogs, and tracks objects in the database. Processes incoming and outgoing loans. Ensures proper handling, exhibition, packing, and return of loaned objects. Stores and labels objects in the collection. Reports on the physical conditions of storage and exhibit areas and keeps track of supplies and equipment needed for the care of the collection. Maintains records, including accession, catalog, and loan records. Performs research to identify and catalog artifacts. Assists staff and researches by locating, retrieving, and obtaining information on the agency's collections. Develops and manages space utilization plans and storage requirements for the collections in conjunction with the Museum's Director. Trains and supervises interns and volunteers in cataloging, data entry, inventory, and other projects. Occasionally travels to professional museum or maritime heritage conferences to represent the American Merchant marine Museum. The ideal candidate will have experience or relevant education in order to plan museum program activities and to provide advice and assistance relative to the museum services with knowledge of maritime history and its material culture. ITo meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.To qualify for the GS-12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11, it must include:
Experience with principles, procedures, practices, concepts, and methodology involved in the conservation and management of collection e.g., acquiring, cataloguing, conserving, storing, exhibiting, loading transferring, accessioning, and de-accessioning collection material consistent with best practices as accepted by the American Association of Museums. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
